As a parent, walking through the name picking process was straight forward then. Back in our parents’ era, my father’s criteria was to have a name that sounds nice. In additionally for some, put in some thoughts on the meaning behind the characters and you get the name. Period.
Parents have nowadays become more educated and would go with their preference and creativity. As such you have been able to seen a lot of unique names for each of the beloved children.
Now how about our Chinese names? How do we select a good name yet with a good balance of between being unique and refine with good meanings? What are the things to look out for an auspicious name?
In Chinese name selection, most parents would typically decide on the ‘yin’ (音) – meaning how it sound together with the surname along with the 2 characters together. That’s actually just the first part.
To get a good name, there are a few areas to look into. Bazi (八字) of the person/child, surname, right choice of characters to have a nice sounding to it, meaning in the characters chosen and lastly the number of strokes of the characters.
The challenge comes as you can see comes from matching the above mentioned to get an overall good structure (五格数理) to the selected name. A completion of each name meeting the criteria is thus like finishing a puzzle with the end game to getting an auspicious refined name.
To peer into each selection process, let me bring you into an overview of the process.
Firstly, the lucky elements from the person’s bazi is first derived and this needs to be incorporate into the word character selection. Careful choice of characters is required and can be tedious. As such, it is always necessary to only get the name after baby is born or unless it is a caesarean birth. For without the birth chart, the names selected would not be suited to the lucky element of the baby.
Secondly, unknown to most, the surname would actually restrict the choice of names. Each surname comes with different strokes. Example, 陈 and 卓. The surname 陈 possesses 16 strokes and is of fire element while 卓 has only 8 strokes. The higher the strokes from your surname basically reduces your naming choices. The surname and names would combine to form strokes count and there are only certain strokes sum that is deem auspicious. As such, those surnames with lesser strokes will have the advantage. All these forms the structure of your name and we have to ensure no clash is found within the combination of character. This is related to how I have described in the above points where combination of characters chosen has to fit.
Thirdly, tone and sound of name would have to sound pleasant and from combination of your names and surname is deem auspicious. Choice of words are extremely important as we do not want to have negative connotation or link to negative meaning. Interestingly, this can also apply to English names too which most of us may have come across in life. Ultimately, we wish to balance between unique but a refine name for each individual.
You would now think, how does one’s name relate to their fortune/destiny and the influence of a right name?
If I were to pick an analogy for one’s bazi and name, it goes like this.
Bazi represents the route you walk in life. Born on a good day and time, your life can be an easy walk in the park with nice scenery. Your name is like the clothes and shoes you wear. It serves to enhance your walk.
Should your bazi be less ideal, then your walk through this route would be better equipped with better shoes and resources to help you walk better with an auspicious name.
